Have a sustainable summer!

Summer is a time of festivals, picnics and outdoor eating. It is so easy, as the sunshine warms our winter sodden brains, to go for the most convenient options – single use plates, cutlery and glasses, to cut down on the washing up and the bother of taking our waste home with us. Most of us will find a bin, but as seen in Exmouth recently, a lot of litter doesn’t quite find its way to the appropriate recycling point or litter bin.

We want to be able to go home from a fantastic event with the great feeling that our revelry hasn’t damaged our planet. Topsham has its very own zero waste store, Nourish and here are their summer swops to make outdoor events more sustainable this year. In fact, since most of the swops are for reusable products, you will be able to have years of plastic free summers!

Try this
Instead of this
Stainless steel straws
Single use plastic straws
An insulated bottle to make sure your beverage stays cold (or hot)
Plastic bottles of water or Tetra Pac cartons of juice
Bamboo cutlery (even if you only use it once, at least it is compostable), or even your normal metal cutlery for a refined feel…
Plastic cutlery – ever managed to slice anything with a plastic knife, ever?
Metal pint mug
Plastic single use pint glasses – they are too squishy anyways!
Proper plates – remember those enamelled metal ones from scout camp?
Plastic or paper plates (usually wrapped in plastic when you buy them as well)
Beeswax food wraps – with the bonus that they breathe so no more sweaty sandwiches
Cling film
Reusable mug
Disposable coffee cup
Cotton produce bags for fruit
Plastic bags
